Col d'Orcia traces its modern lineage to 1890 when the Franceschi family purchased the property then known as Fattoria di Sant'Angelo in Colle. The estate was showing Brunello as early as 1933 at the Wine Exhibition of Siena, decades before the wine gained international renown. In 1973 Stefano Franceschi sold the property to the Cinzano Marone family, who expanded plantings and turned Col d'Orcia into one of Montalcino's largest estates. In recent decades the winery has grown its Brunello vineyard holdings, embraced organic and sustainable practices, and preserved a large cellar of older vintages for study and release.
